12/11/2023 0 Comments Kobo libra 2 review reddit![]() And it doesn’t help that both are about 20% heavier. It’s a clean design in some ways and for all I know it may even be more comfortable to hold, but it’s already tough enough to find a pocket the Forma fits in. The new Sage and Libra 2 are definitely chunkier, with no extra-thin screen part, instead being as thick as thickest section all the way through. Truly the differences seem smaller than I made them out to be. Side view of the Sage (top) and Forma (bottom). Both readers come with 32 gigs of storage built in to accommodate this new space-hogging feature. It’s possible that tie-ins with other services (like the devices’ solid Pocket integration) are simply forthcoming. The company has generally been very open to different formats and services, letting you load whatever document formats you want on its readers - so it’s surprising that the approach here is more restricted. While it’s always nice to have new capabilities, it’s a little surprising that Kobo decided to limit this to its own service. New in both the readers is Bluetooth audio that can be used exclusively for sending Kobo audiobooks to your wireless headset of choice. I’ll do an apples-to-apples comparison to make sure. The new screen promises to be better but not a revolution - same resolution, same temperature adjustment and so on, but it should be faster to refresh and offer slightly better contrast. (If you want smaller, the Clara is still the best move.) Likewise the Libra 2 is the sequel to the Libra H2O (they’re dropping the H2O, but it’s still waterproof), with the same type of display and light at 7″ instead. The excellent 8″, 300 PPI screen and color-adjustable screen light are getting an upgrade to the new Carta 1200 type display, so rest assured the reading experience will continue to be great. The Sage is the higher-end of the two models, being an evolution of the Forma, which I reviewed here. The Sage and Libra 2 also gain a new charging cover so you only have to plug the device in every few months rather than every few weeks. A replacement cable had the wrong kobo-end, but it fit into connector slot! I bought a 3rd party USB cable making sure it precisely matched USB specifications on both ends side-loading nirvana ensued.A pair of new e-readers from Kobo iterate on the company’s high-end options, adding Bluetooth audiobook and stylus support to the now familiar asymmetrical design of its larger devices. Out of the box at least I could charge, but it was just blind to the computer. I wonder if the Kobo provided computer connection cable is a poster child what "Made in China" means in all the worst ways. It appears the UI is kept consistent across its eReader line. I sense Kobo is very mindful of UI changes complementing and preserving its fine reading experience. I am pleasantly surprised at the number of software updates, adding thoughtful features and more importantly fixing the bugs. Freezes were never (almost never?) while simply reading and page turning. For the first year I had sometimes glitchy library checkout, rare but annoying freezes, and spotty computer connectivity. I initially bought it due to my girlfriend’s Libra H2O working perfectly, but as things stand the difference is night and day.įWIW I've had a Kobo Forma since April 2019. I am currently desperately hoping for a good firmware update which would make the device predictable in usage. Supposedly you have to go for a kobo if you sideload books, but a glance at the forums and kobo subreddit will show you people constantly have to factory reset their devices because there’s always something going wrong.īear in mind I really want to make the kobo work and have gone through 10 devices at the shop for the ghosting and 3 devices for all the other issues. Occasionally the device freezes and you need to reset it. At the July software update a ton of people including me got their readers stuck in boot loops as well, struggling to update, god knows why. It simply refuses to actually connect to the pc and goes into a boot loop. The reader doesn’t play good with usb cables and that includes the cable from the box. The supposedly same screen (carta 1200) has a slight unfixable ghosting issue, regardless of page refresh frequency. For four months with the Kobo I’ve not had a day with something not going wrong. ![]() ![]() For five years with the Paperwhite I just sideloaded books and read them. I myself made the switch from an old paperwhite to a kobo libra 2. Currently, due to a string of bad firmware updates from May onwards, the Libra 2 are extremely bug ridden and there’s always something that’s not working as planned. ![]()
